2 September 2011- Nice/Eze/Monaco/Monte Carlo...

This morning we woke up late again (Nice was the city for taking it easy) before taking a half day tour to Monaco, Eze and Monte Carlo. We were the only two people in a Tarago and our tour guide was a mildly surly French fellow who’d previously worked in Alice Springs for seven months. Taking this four hour tour gave us a taste of what it would’ve been like if we’d been on a bus tour of Europe. Getting in the car, drive, 15 minutes free time, drive to the next destination. Rush.

I’m glad we planned our own trip. Although coordinating things on our own has had its own challenges, having the freedom to construct our own daily itinerary has its definite advantages. Freedom, time and flexibility.

First stop was the Fragonard perfume factory. Its main factory is in Grasse and the perfumes are fresh and unique. I purchased one for Dad and we overdosed on scents and coffee beans.

Just as quickly we were back in the Tarago, winding up along the French Riveria. The sky was a brilliant, soft blue and we peered out the window at the stunning coastal scenery- houses stacked up the mountain in a seemingly hotchpotch fashion.

We got dropped off at Eze, stepping carefully up the narrow, cobblestoned streets and appreciating the tiny shops that have been slotted into along the ancient paths.

[Eze:]

Twenty minutes later, we sped up to Monaco (which is a separate country to France even though it’s nestled between two French cities, and is two square kilometres. It is the second smallest country, with the Vatican pipping it to the post) and took pictures of the Prince of Monaco’s palace and the Cathedral (where Grace Kelly and every other member of royalty has been buried).

[The Cathedral:]

[People do actually drive around in expensive old cars in Monaco- they don't call it a tax haven for nothing!]

[Monaco and all its extravagant yachts:]

The tour ended at Monte Carlo, where we took pictures of the Casino before speeding super fast back down to Nice.

[This is actually a Library- on the way back to Nice from Monte Carlo:]

What a super superficial tour of Monaco, Eze and Monte Carlo! I kind of liked it though- short and sweet.
