3 September 2011- Nice/La Spezia

Today we spent seven hours across three different trains from on the way from Nice to Ventimiglia (our first steps into Italy!) to Genovo and finally La Spezia. We swapped bonjour for ciao! and merci for gracie! and came upon an Aussie couple (newly married and on their honeymoon) and a Canadian couple (long time married, and on their 25th anniversary celebratory trip) during our journey.

[On the train:]

Man from Mars has caught my cold and is dosed up on paracetamol, but like a champion he takes our big bags up the many many steps that populate European train stations (note to self if you want to do Europe—take as LITTLE as you can! I only packed 10 kilos, and it’s still killing me!). We finally arrived in La Spezia at 7:15 pm, all hungry and sweaty and searching for dinner. As it’s a Saturday night here, the restaurants were all booked out. So we got some pizza takeaway and ate it in our state of the art hotel room (it’s 4 star, all the rest of ours have been 2 star! I’m pretty sure it was the price of a 2 star—it even has a bidet and free wifi!).

[You know you're in Italy when everyone is casually riding around on Vespas:]

[Dinner- fresh pizza- so fresh the topping slid off on the walk back to the hotel:]

[The bidet!]

It’s incredible that after only a bunch of hours on the train, we’re in a different country, with a different language and culture— arrivederci until tomorrow J
